MEXICO – JUST ME…(photos by yaira)

As a child she could feel the warm morning breeze coming through the windows. Hear the birds singing in the trees. And smell the Ocean all around her. She would wander out onto the busy streets and smile. This is where she grew up. Played in the sun. And daydreamed about her future. Mexico was Yaira’s first home.

When she was 19 she moved to Canada. Leaving behind the smells of the Ocean and the sounds of the birds. But London quickly became her second favourite place on earth. Her second home. Here she met a boy. Fell in love. And started a family. But every now and then she still daydreams about returning home to visit her brother. See where she grew up again. And share this world with her husband and son.

Recently Yaira decided it was time. She booked the flights. Packed her bags. And traveled to Mexico to visit her brother. She hadn’t hugged him in 4 years. They talked daily on the phone or through Skype. But it’s not quite the same as wrapping your arms around someone you love. And as she saw him across the park for the first time her heart swelled. Her brother. Her best friend. Her other half. She was home. And this time she had her whole family with her to share it. Her two worlds combined in one place.

JESSICA AND CHRIS – THE DAY…(photos by yaira)

From the across the room she saw him. Tall. Handsome. Wearing an oatmeal sweater. And his smile so big it beamed. He saw her too. Blonde hair. Blue eyes. And remembered her from the week when he saw her at a party. He had asked a friend if she was single, hoping he might have a chance. Jessica had been on Chris’s mind since the minute he laid eyes on her.

There wasn’t really a first date. Or magical moment. They just started dating somehow. And before they knew it Jessica and Chris were in love. Yet it wasn’t until they were forced with having to be part apart from each other did they realize just how much. Jessica was planning to move back to Windsor meaning they would be hours apart. Both something they agreed would be okay. But as the days crept closer they couldn’t bear the thought of  it. As they sat on the bed together talking, tears started to roll down Jessica’s face. Then Chris’s. They didn’t say a word. Just listened to each other’s heart beats. And looking into each other’s eyes Jessica knew that there was no way she could go. Not away from London. Not Chris.  She was in love with the boy in the oatmeal sweater and she wouldn’t leave his side. Ever.

MANDY AND CHARLES – THE DAY…(photos by yaira)

The first time Ewan saw me I was wearing a blue wool sweater. A really ugly blue sweater.  My hair was styled in the (at the time) popular pixie-cut. And I was wearing a blue bandanna to match said sweater, also ugly. I don’t know what was thinking. I’ll blame it on being a first year University student with a lack of sleep. But somehow Ewan saw past my style-less get up and I caught his eye. My outfit didn’t wow him, but something else must have because after exchanging just a few words we found ourselves talking non-stop. Every spare minute of every day. Completely and utterly hooked.

The first time Charles saw Mandy she was wearing baggy gray sweat pants. Really baggy gray sweat pants. The kind that an extra person could fit inside. They were anything but stylish. Or fashionable. Yet they were comfortable. A number one requirement when you’re a student. And even though Mandy wasn’t looking for a relationship or to catch anyone’s attention, Charles couldn’t help but stare. He didn’t even notice the sweatpants. Over sized and gray. And large enough to house 2 people. All he could see was her smile. Her eyes. And the beautiful girl standing there in front of him. The outfit may not have wowed him, but something did because he was already smitten. And completely and utterly hooked.

JULIA AND JAY – THE DAY…(photos by yaira)

I had just signed the lease on my first apartment. My parents and Ewan had helped me haul boxes. All day long. Heavy ones. And I was beyond exhausted. Ewan and I said we wouldn’t move in together until we were engaged or married. So it wasn’t a very large apartment. Actually, downright tiny. Just big enough for one person. And one very fat cat. So that night when Ewan asked me where he should put his things all I could do was give him a confused look. Which he quickly took away by finishing the rest of his thoughts and asking me to marry him. It was May 1st. The air smelled like Spring. And my heart was filled with love.

It was Labour Day weekend. Julia and Jay were having some friends over for dinner. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just a normal weekend. Or so Julia thought. The entire meal Jay waited patiently for the right moment. The right opening. The exact right second to propose in front of their closest friends. But after a giant meal, food comas set in and everyone was too tired, especially Jay. The next night the long weekend celebrations continued but again the moment didn’t seem quite right. Jay was starting to worry that maybe he’d lost the opportunity. But then on Monday night, it happened. With only a few hours of the weekend left, he asked Julia to go for a walk. They sat together on a bench and enjoyed the quiet evening around them. Jay opened his mouth to speak and something came out, although he’s not really sure what. And Julia yelled yes before he could even finish. As the rain started to fall around them, the air smelled like autumn. And they ran hand in hand back home. Their hearts filled with love.

RACHAEL AND TIM – THE DAY…(photos by yaira)

The way he asked her was simple. Short. To the point. And nothing overly fussy. Exactly perfect. Exactly them.

Rachael knew that she liked Tim and wasn’t shy about sharing it. But with him in a relationship it seemed them being together might not be in the cards. When Tim became available Rachael waited patiently hoping he had noticed her. Waiting for him to ask her out. When it didn’t happen right away Rachael told a friend that she would have to do it herself it things didn’t happen soon. All it took was that little kick in the butt because suddenly Tim was asking. It was simple. Short. And to the point. Their first date was set.

Their first date happened. And the months passed. Rachael and Tim dated throughout college and university. On again. Off again. They grew up together. Matured together. And always came back to each other. There was no special moment. No alarm bells. Or dramatic romantic story. Just them. And an understanding that they are meant to be together.

On a weekend away in Niagara Falls all of their friends were convinced that Tim was going to ask Rachael to marry him. Rachael was convinced it wouldn’t happen then because it seemed too predictable. Too unlike them to get engaged at such a romantic spot. And Tim had been telling her for months that he didn’t have enough money for a ring yet. So the weekend went along with Rachael not suspecting a thing. Then as they were walking Tim turned to look at her. And asked. Not on one knee. Not at a specific lookout point. Or a grand gesture. Just simple. Short. To the point. And nothing overly fussy. Exactly perfect. Exactly them.
